The dictionary defines "nourished" in three beautiful ways, each contributing to the art of nourishing your life:
Supply Yourself with What is Necessary for Life, Health, and Growth
Take a moment to reflect and assess. What is feeding your life right now and keeping you healthy? Begin with something as fundamental as your eating habits. Nutrition plays a substantial role in how we feel physically and emotionally. Remember, eating nutrient-rich, nourishing food is more about health than a diet.
Eating nutritionally gradually becomes a habit, a want-to, rather than a have-to. Your body also requires exercise, water, and rest. How would you rate yourself in these areas regarding nourishing your life?
Exercising does not have to mean sweating it out in the gym; how about going for a walk in nature? How do you incorporate exercise into your life? What about rest? Maintaining a consistent sleep schedule is vital, especially if you struggle with Seasonal Affective Disorder in the winter. A regular routine helps balance your circadian rhythms, which are essential for serotonin levels and preventing depression.
Your requirements for nourishing your life might be different from mine, and that's perfectly okay. The key is knowing what you need or embarking on the journey of discovery. Ask yourself simple questions: What eating habits give you the best energy? What habits do you need to establish to nourish your body better? How's your sleep and rest, and what changes might you want to initiate?
Cherish, Foster, and Keep Your Heart
Nourishing yourself also involves your attitudes and daily intentions. How you approach your day-to-day living plays a significant role in determining whether you feel you are living a nourished life.
In the book "Switch," Chip and Dan Heath introduce the "Captain and Crew" analogy, likening our minds to a ship sailing through life. The Captain symbolises our minds' logical, planning side, while the Crew embodies our emotional, action-oriented side. Just as a ship can't progress without a cooperative and motivated crew, our plans and intentions won't come to fruition without our emotional side being on board. The key is ensuring that the Captain and Crew work together harmoniously, where the Captain respects the emotions and concerns of the Crew, and the Crew acknowledges the Captain's leadership and guidance. By nurturing this cooperation, we can chart a course that seamlessly combines our rational plans with our heartfelt emotions, fulfilling our goals and the embodiment of a nourished life.
Strengthen, Build up, or Promote Your Nourished Life
When you find something that is working well in your life, celebrate it. What's currently nourishing you? Look at your day or your week. What can you strengthen or build upon that will bring more significant dividends with even a minor tweak?
What about you?
What can you begin to tweak to add nourishment to your life? Will you start with your health or perhaps explore how you make decisions? You may see what's already in place and strengthen those connections.
In this season of celebration and gratitude, remember that nurturing yourself is a gift you give to both yourself and those you love. It's an investment in a life filled with vitality, happiness, and cherished moments with family and friends.
As you move through your day, consider how each decision aligns with the question, "How will this nourish me?" This simple yet powerful inquiry can guide you towards a life filled with vitality and joy.
